How to Unzip a Zip File using Windows XP - in Words

The first step is to open Windows Explorer. To do this, right click on the Start button and select Explore. Next, navigate to where you have downloaded your zip file. Once you have located your file, double click on the zip folder in the right pane. A new window will pop up.

You can click on the folders to view their contents if you want, or you can click on Extract Files in the left pane if you want to begin extracting the files from the zip folder.

After you click Extract Files, the Extraction Wizard will open up. Click Next. The next window shows you where the files will be extracted to. By default, the files will be extracted to the same folder where the zip file is. If you want to change the destination, simply click Browse and pick a new location. After you've decided where you want the extracted files to go, click Next and the files will be extracted.

In the final window of the Extraction Wizard, you will be given the option of viewing the extracted file. Place a checkmark in the box to view the files and click Finish. The extracted files will appear and you will be able to access them.

If you're not ready to work with the files you have extracted you can access them later by navigating to the folder where you saved the files. As I close these windows down you can see that the newly extracted folder is shown in the right pane. Click on it and you'll again see all the extracted elements.

If you want to free up space on your hard drive it is not necessary to save the zip file once you've successfully extracted it. However, if you want a backup copy, save the zip on another hard drive or burn it to a CD.
